The Core Four: MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings & FanDuel – May 14, 2022

Four Core MLB DFS Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel Contests on May 14, 2022.

In this article, we four core for FanDuel & DraftKings daily fantasy baseball contests. These players are the ones we are going to have the most exposure to on each of the sites. Let’s jump right into today’s article.

We will stick with the same format that we’ve used recently, focusing on lower-ownership candidates for tournaments (GPPs) in this article. If you are looking for cash game plays, make sure to check out all the other great articles that we post on FantasyCruncher on a daily basis.

Top Pitcher

Shane Bieber

After a rough outing against the Jays last weekend, it’s very possible that we’ll see Bieber underowned on the Saturday evening slate. I’m not too perturbed by what looks like a slower start in 2022. His 3.76 SIERA and 13% whiff / 34% chase marks are all still quite solid. Especially a 66% LOB% that should easily jump back over the course of the season closer to 85%+ (a more normalized area for this stat). He doesn’t give up many home runs and faces a MIN team with the 18th ranked wOBA in the split vs RHP (.305 to be exact YTD). For the price and overall skills he brings to the table, he’s still an elite target this evening.

Paul Blackburn (bonus for the earlier slates on the day)

This guy just isn’t getting the love he deserves in DFS circles just yet. His 2.80 SIERA to date is absolutely sparkling, even though his 1.74 ERA is a full run better than that may suggest. That said, would you be upset if you saw a guy with a 2.80 ERA? Absolutely not. Especially one who barely walks anyone (.87 BB/9 through 31 IP) and keeps the ball on the ground at a nice clip (51%). He’s a rock solid value arm that should be fairly underowned, given he throws for Oakland but also faces a talented Angels lineup. There’s still a good path to a QS here, and an outside chance at a win.

Stud Hitter

Rafael Devers

The slower start to the year coupled with the high price point today should make Devers a slightly overlooked target. Especially with a team total for the Red Sox of just 4.04 runs. I don’t need to be the one to tell you that Devers smashes in this split, with a .390 wOBA / 147 wRC+ / .594 SLG / .310 ISO in his last 675 PA against RHP – exactly the situation he finds himself in against Glen Otto here this evening. Power up.

Value Hitter

Carlos Santana

Cheap Coors access is never a bad thing, and on DraftKings today we have Santana sitting at a mere $2,400. The game total in this one is 10.5 runs, and even though the Royals have a 4.58 implied run total (compared to Colorado’s 5.92 mark), I still recommend one or two pieces of exposure to the underdogs. Santana’s been swinging it pretty well lately, reaching base safely in each of his last 11 games played, and faces a COL RHP in German Marquez who isn’t in tip-top shape right now. For the price, he can’t be beat.

Top Stack

Boston Red Sox

There aren’t too many occasions where I can feel like the Red Sox are going to be a group that will be owned less than they should be in DFS. This evening against Glen Otto should be one of those, though. It’s not very often that BOS will be 9th in terms of implied runs on a given slate, which has a lot to do with the fact that they’re off to a fairly slow start to 2022 and May in particular. However, I do see plenty of upside in that lineup this evening, starting with Rafael Devers who I mentioned above and in the Dinger of the Day column (link below).

While Devers is in the best recent form over the last week of action (250 wRC+, .286 ISO, .516 wOBA), Xander Bogaerts (.342 wOBA) and J.D. Martinez (.337 wOBA and a 53% hard hit rate) are also turning the corner. Alex Verdugo and Trevor Story are not quite where we’ve come to expect them to be, but there is BABIP upside and barrel rate upside (particularly for Verdugo) given how he’s striking the ball. I love the Devers-Bogaerts-Martinez trio here today, and sprinkling in some Verdugo isn’t a bad idea as well.
