Vegas Odds & Insights

Highest Win Probabilities Main Slate

  • Clayton Kershaw (68.9%)
  • Max Scherzer (68.8%)
  • Sonny Gray (61.7%)

Lowest Team Totals Main Slate

  • Seattle Mariners (2.76)
  • Philadelphia Phillies (2.95)
  • San Diego Padres (3.05)

Top Overall Play

Max Scherzer – It was hard to narrow down my top overall pitcher on tonight’s slate as there are so many great options. There are four or five pitchers I could make a case for being in this spot. Ultimately Scherzer won out over the other pitchers despite him not being in the best form of late. Scherzer has allowed seven runs in his past two starts. The reason why Scherzer won out for me is even with those two bad starts Scherzer is having an excellent season. Mad Max comes into tonight’s game with an ERA of 2.92, a WHIP of 0.95, and a K rate of 34.3%. The K rate is what really stands out to me as it is the highest on this slate and Scherzer has struck out at least seven hitters in five straight starts. I also like the fact that we know Scherzer is going to pitch deep into this game. Scherzer has pitched at least six innings in all but one start and is tied with Kevin Gausman for the highest average innings per outing. Another thing that sets Scherzer apart from the other elite pitchers on this slate is his match-up. Scherzer gets to take on the Mariners who are really struggling right now. Over the past two weeks, Seattle has had the fifth-lowest team OPS and sixth-lowest team ISO in the majors.

Top Value Play

Sonny Gray – There are a lot of excellent value pitchers on this slate tonight but Gray really stands out to me based on the way Gray looked in his return start from the IL. In that start, Gray pitched four shutout innings with seven strikeouts. The only four innings pitched were due to Gray being on a pitch count which is not something he should be on today or if he is on one it would be higher than his last start. The only real drawback for me when it does come to Gray compared to some of the other pitchers on this slate is that he does face Cleveland which has been one of the top three hitting teams in the majors against right-handed pitching this season. What Gray does lack in match-up compared to the other cheaper pitchers he does make up for in talent as overall Gray is one of the better pitchers in the majors and if it was not for his injury earlier in the season we would not be getting him for this cheap.

Other Pitchers to Consider

Before getting into the four pitchers below I did want to say there are half a dozen other pitches I also like on this slate. While I am not going to go in-depth on those guys tonight I did want to list them below as options for you to have

Clayton Kershaw, Kevin Gausman, Gerrit Cole, Framber Valdez, Aaron Civale, Kyle Freeland

Max Fried – I wanted to highlight Fried in the other pitchers to consider portion of this article over some of the other expensive pitchers on this slate as I feel he is going to have lower ownership due to his match-up against the Padres who have hit the ball really well against left-handed pitching this season. While the match-up for Fried is not a great one he has just been pitching too good for me after a rough start to the season. Fried allowed seven earned runs (eight overall) in his first two starts but has allowed a total of four runs over his past four starts. Fried has pitched at least six innings in each of those starts and checks in with an ERA of 1.38, a K rate of 28.0%, and a WHIP of just 0.58.

Nick Pivetta – Pivetta is not a good pitcher at all. In fact, he is a pitcher that I typically stack against but tonight I am going to have plenty of shares to him for two reasons. The first is that he is coming off an excellent outing against the White Sox. In that start, Pivetta pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts on his way to 25.9 fantasy points. The second reason is due to the match-up against the Rangers. The Rangers spent a lot of money in the offseason trying to fix their lineup and it has not worked. This season the Rangers rank in the bottom five in team ISO, team OPS, team wOBA, and team wRC+ against right-handed pitching.

Eduardo Rodriguez – Rodriguez has always been an inconsistent pitcher and it is hard to really know what you are going to get with him. With that being said I think we see a great performance from Rodriguez tonight due to the fact he faces the Orioles. The Orioles have been one of if not the worst hitting team in the majors this season against left-handed pitching. This season they rank dead last in team OPS and in the bottom five in team ISO, team wOBA, and team wRC+ while having the second-highest team K rate at 27.7% against left-handed pitching.

Jordan Lyles – Lyles has two straight-quality starts for the Orioles and has produced at least 15 fantasy points in three of his past four starts. Lyles is not only putting up solid numbers for the Orioles but he is also in one of the best possible match-ups you can be for a pitcher as he takes on the Tigers. The Tigers rank in the bottom two in team ISO, team OPS, team wOBA, and team wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season while having a high team K rate of 24.1%. For just $5,400 in salary on DraftKings and $7,900 in salary on FanDuel, you could do a lot worst than Lyles.
