Week 17 NFL DFS: The Value Report

Welcome to the Value Report for Week 17. Sharing top value plays at each position for FanDuel, DraftKings & Yahoo! contests.

There are a lot of different ways to determine who is a value play when it comes to DFS.

You have your traditional way of basing value strictly off of salary. X player is only Y in salary thus he is a value play. I personally don’t like to determine value that way as just because a player is cheap doesn’t actually mean they are a value. Instead of using just salary to determine value, I like to use projections and salary. I look at how high a player is projected relative to his peers and his salary relative to his peers as well.

For example, Player X is the 5th highest projected wide receiver on DraftKings but is only the 15th most expensive wide receiver. That to me is a great value. Another way I like to look at value is to look at how expensive a player is relative to other sites. For instance Player G is the 4th most expensive quarterback on FanDuel and the 5th most expensive quarterback on DraftKings but is the 13th most expensive quarterback on Yahoo. That player would also stand out as a value for me on Yahoo. In this article, we will be breaking down some of the top values we have found using those two formulas on each of the three sites for each of the positions.

Note: You will see some changes in the Salary Rank and Projection rank. Though this article only pertains to the Main Slate of games the Salary Rank and Projection Rank will encompass all players for the week (Thursday-Monday). You can also sort the projection and salary ranks directly on FC now under the columns titled Position Rankings and Overall Rankings.

Quarterback Values

Trey Lance is the obvious top quarterback value this week assuming that Jimmy Garoppolo is out. Working on that assumption, Lance would be the tenth-highest projected quarterback this week while checking in as the 26th most expensive quarterback on DraftKings and 21st most expensive quarterback on FanDuel.

Running Back Values

The three biggest values at the running back position are David Montgomery, Michael Carter, and Boston Scott but they are certainly not the only values at the position this week. Montgomery is the 14th most expensive running back on DraftKings and 11th most expensive on FanDuel this week while checking in as the sixth-highest projected running back (fourth-highest on this slate) this week. Carter checks in as the 28th most expensive on DraftKings and 25th most expensive on FanDuel while checking in with the ninth-highest projection. Scott is the 30th most expensive running back on DraftKings and 22nd on FanDuel while checking in as the 11th highest projected running back.

Wide Receiver Values

Four wide receivers jump out at me this week for this article. Two of the players jump out at me as positive values while the other two jump out as negative values. Let’s focus on the positive values first starting with the best value on this slate Brandin Cooks. Cooks is the 21st most expensive wide receiver on DraftKings and 17th most expensive on FanDuel while checking in as the sixth-highest projected (fourth-highest on this slate) wide receiver this week. Am0n-Ra St. Brown is the other positive value that jumps out at me especially on DraftKings. St. Brown has the same salary as Cooks on DraftKings making him the 21st most expensive wide receiver this week while checking in as the 14th most expensive on FanDuel and checking in as the tenth-highest projected wide receiver this week.

Moving to negative values Stefon Diggs is the first player that jumps out at me. Diggs is the sixth-most expensive wide receiver on both DraftKings and FanDuel this week but checks in as just the 23 highest projected receiver this week. Antonio Brown is the other wide receiver that I wanted to discuss as a negative value and specifically for FanDuel. On FanDuel, Brown is the fourth-most expensive wide receiver this week while checking in as the 20th most expensive receiver on DraftKings while checking in as the 24th highest projected receiver this week. I will say that Brown’s projection rank could change drastically between now and lock as we are still waiting to hear if he is going to play as well as Mike Evans. If Brown is able to play and Evans isn’t Brown’s projection is likely to skyrocket.

Tight End Values

There are several elite values at the tight end position with Mike Gesicki being the best value in my eyes. Gesicki is the eighth-most expensive tight end on both DraftKings and FanDuel while having the second-highest projection this week. Another player that really jumped out at me was Cameron Brate. Brate is the 26th most expensive tight end on DraftKings and the 19th most expensive on FanDuel this week but checks in with the ninth-highest projection.

While there are a ton of elite values at the position there are also some players that are negative values with Dalton Schultz looking like the biggest negative value. Shultz is the 11th most expensive tight end on DraftKings and the eight-most expensive on FanDuel while checking in as just the 17th highest projected player at the tight end position this week.

Defense Values

At the defensive position, two teams jump out at me right away. The Colts are a team that jumps out at me right away as a positive value. The Colts are the 12th most expensive defense on both DraftKings and FanDuel this week but check in with the second-highest projection. The other team that jumps out at me is the 49ers. The 49ers jump out at me as a negative value as they are the third-most-expensive team on DraftKings and fifth-most on FanDuel but check in with just the 14th highest projection this week.
