Week 1 NFL DFS Wide Receivers (WR) Targets For DraftKings & FanDuel

Welcome to the FC Insights Wide Receiver Targets Article. In this post, we will be breaking down our top options and plays at the WR position for each DFS week of the 2021-2022 NFL DFS season.

Top Plays

Tyler Lockett (DK- $6,700, FD- $6,800)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
@ IND 25.75 0.76 36.14

The receptions are really close compared to his teammate D.K. Metcalf, but Tyler finished off last season with the most targets (132), and receptions (100) on his team. However, Tyler is entering this game with an apparent groin injury so take that with a grain of salt. The positive is that Tyler has had his involvement managed within practice to be ready for kick-off. Although this may be the trickiest matchup against Xavier Rhodes most likely, Rhodes still had 0.76 passes defended per game. Also, either D.K or Tyler both can’t be contained all game by one person so there is opportunity for both to take advantage here in the potentially third highest scoring game on the slate.

A.J. Brown (DK- $7,100, FD- $7,800)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
ARI 27.5 0.50 37.52

With Julio Jones as a teammate now at his side A.J. Brown has potential to cause even more havoc for teams which adds to why A.J is so pricey at his position, but with good reason. To TEN’s benefit, they also have the second-best defense vs the WR position (24th). For now, it wouldn’t be surprising if A.J. still racks up the most receptions again for a while as Julio adjusts. The only worry would be the balance of the team’s offense due to their efficient running game. ARI ranked as the 14th worst allowing fantasy points to the wide-receiver position, which is also among the middle of teams, but having another elite wide-receiver at A.J.’s side now should make ARI struggle even more.

Diontae Johnson (DK- $6,300, FD- $6,600)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
@ BUF 21.25 0.53 32.98

Diontae fell under the radar going into last season and very much may do similar again this season with the breakout of his teammate Chase Claypool. With Chase playing the right wide-receiver position more than likely he’d have to deal with BUF’s best cornerback in Tre’Davious White which places Diontae in a nice spot to flourish against the easier matchup on his side. Diontae also averaged the most targets at his position (144) on his team so this bodes well for targets to be funneled his way once again, although he was second in receptions behind JuJu Smith-Schuster. Regardless, BUF only has one shutdown cornerback so to speak and BUF may not shadow one receiver due to potential of three of them having an efficient game catching/scoring.

Calvin Ridley (DK- $7,900, FD- $8,100)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
PHI 25.5 0.54 40.21

Julio Jones now gone, best defense vs the position advantage (31st), and targets more than likely to go towards him the most going forward all boding well for Calvin Ridley in this matchup. PHI also ended last season allowing the 8th most fantasy points against the WR position (40.21) which is another plus for ATL. PHI also hasn’t made any dramatic changes as of late to the cornerback position (at least to start the season) so they may end up trending towards how they finished the season. Since both teams ended the season within top 10 most fantasy points allowed to the wide receiver position there shouldn’t be surprise if they start off that way which could lead to multiple scores both ways through the air, thus the fifth highest vegas total on the slate (48).

Odell Beckham Jr. (DK- $5,400, FD- $6,500)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
@ KC 24.25 0.56 29.68

Fresh off the ACL surgery Odell Beckham Jr. (OBJ) has looked healthy again towards the start of the new season and should make an impact for his team right away. Before the injury last season, OBJ was on pace to average the most targets per game (6.1) and may head in that direction again, due to his supposed full workload being given to start.  Due to the high scoring ability from Patrick Mahomes, CLE will most likely have to play from behind during the game which benefits the receivers more. However, since KC allowed the second least fantasy points to this position (29.68) this may be the riskiest pick, but due to CLE’s two headed-backfield that should over time open up some play-action plays which can potentially give OBJ and his wideout teammates some opportunities here.

Jerry Jeudy (DK- $4,800, FD- $5,500)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
@ NYG 22.5 0.56 35.07

Jerry has another new quarterback to throw to him and his teammates this season, but has been improving his route running and gets his teammate Courtland Sutton back which should result in Jerry being focused less on the field by defensive-backs. In addition, Teddy Bridgewater has had more attempts (492) in passing compared to Drew Lock last season (443), which could lead to more chances for Jerry Jeudy and the wideouts this season. NYG also may have their cornerback in Logan Ryan (who had the 12th least passes defended at cornerback) listed at the free safety position now which suits Jerry’s playstyle of attacking further down-field. Also, DEN has the fourth best advantage of this WR group (14th defense vs position) so this could be a sneaky dart throw, especially with Cortland Sutton coming off of ACL surgery and being eased back into the offense.

Tyrell Williams (DK- $4,400, FD- $4400)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
SF 19 0.54 35.55

With the release of Breshad Perriman, Tyrell is arguably the clear-cut number one option on his team going into the season although it’s with a new quarter back in Jared Goff. The only thing to be weary about is the fact that Tyrell has been dealing with a groin injury, but only has the rookie in Amon-Ra St. Brown arguably a threat to his targets with Quintez Cephus barely making the final cut on the depth chart. Although SF ended last season at the 11th in fantasy points allowed to the WR position they still struggled in the past against the more tall/physical receivers so this bodes well for Tyrell along with the potential amount of volume going his way.

Top Value(s) for DK/FD

DK- Emmanuel Sanders ($4,100)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
PIT 27.25 0.54 32.98

Emmanuel Sanders finds himself in a perfect opportunity here going under the radar and in the shadow of his WR teammate in Stephon Diggs who may end up receiving the majority of the attention in this match. Cameron Sutton of PIT was also 6th worst in passes defended at the cornerback position and is slated to still play the right cornerback which is perfect for Emmanuel at the right wide receiver position. At this price on DK its hard to pass up this chance especially with the potential of this game being 5th highest scoring. (Vegas- 48.5)

FD- DeVonta Smith ($5,300)

Opponent Team Total Opponent Passes Defended at CB Per Game Opponent Fantasy Points Allowed Per Game To WRs
@ ATL 22.5 0.50 44.60

DeVonta may be a rookie, but is still slated to be the number one wideout for his PHI team and gets the best opportunity to shine against the worst defense against his position on the slate (31st), by ATL. As stated earlier, PHI ended last season within the top 10 of fantasy points allowed against the wide receiver position, along with ATL being first which can lead to a potential high scoring game between both teams. That being said with this cheap of a price, and expected volume to be on the higher end with the best potential matchup for the position it’s difficult to ignore selecting DeVonta for value here.
