The MLB DFS Pitching Primer on FanDuel & DraftKings – June 10, 2021

MLB DFS: Breaking down the top daily fantasy baseball pitchers on FanDuel & DraftKings for June 10, 2021

Diving into today’s MLB DFS slate to uncover your best pitching plays.

If you’ve been reading this column lately, you’ll know that we’re a big proponent of sticking to the core principles that came out of a deep analysis of 2020 data. Don’t be afraid to pay up for pitching (both sites), and spending around $15,000 to $18,000 is often the optimal range in that department (DK).

Small slate with two clear cut options

There are only six games on the main slate tonight which means there are 12 pitchers to choose from with two out of those 12 standing out above the rest. Those two pitchers are Trevor Rogers and Max Scherzer. In his 12 starts this season, Rogers has not allowed more than two runs in just one start and has not allowed more than three runs in any of those starts. That works out to an ERA of just 1.97 for the young pitcher. Rogers has not only limited the runs but he is also pitching deep into games, limiting the base runners, and striking out batters at a high clip. Rogers is averaging 5.3 innings pitcher per game this season and has pitched at least six innings in four of his past five starts. Rogers has a K rate just shy of 30% at 29.7% and has a WHIP of 1.09. Outside of the innings pitched each of those other numbers rank in the top two for pitchers on this slate. The match-up also works out in Rogers’s favor as he faces the Rockies at home. While the Rockies have some impressive numbers against lefties this season most of that damage is done at Coors Field. When the Rockies leave the Mile High City they become a totally different team. This season the Rockies rank dead last in team OPS, team ISO, and team wOBA in away games while having the fourth-highest team K rate.

Moving on to Scherzer who continues to pitch lights out despite him being a month shy of his 37th birthday. In his 12 starts this season, Scherzer has an ERA of 2.22, a K rate of 36.1%, and a WHIP of 0.82. Scherzer is second on this slate behind Rogers in ERA and first in K rate, WHIP, and average innings pitched. Scherzer has been especially dominant as of late for the Nationals with three straight quality starts that have also included at least nine strikeouts. The Giants are also a match-up that I like for Scherzer despite them being one of the better hitting teams in the majors against right-handed pitching. The Giants have the second-highest team ISO and ninth-highest team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season but they also strike out at the second-highest clip with a 26.8% team K rate.

Is there anyone else worth rostering

On FanDuel I will only have exposure to Scherzer or Rogers even with their high salaries. On DraftKings, I will also be pairing the two of them together in almost all of my lineups as despite them being on the higher side salary-wise as a combo they are not going to totally break the bank at $20,400 in combined salary. With that being said I do think there is one other pitcher to have in your pool on DraftKings tonight and that pitcher is likely to surprise you with some of the other pitchers on this slate. That pitcher is Chi Chi Gonzalez of the Rockies. Gonzalez is only $6,600 in salary on DraftKings tonight and he really has not been horrible this season. Gonzalez also looked good in his last two starts for the Rockies before they moved him into a long relief towards the end of May. In his last two starts against the Padres and Reds with the Reds game coming at Coors Filed, Gonzalez allowed just two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight in 13 innings of action. Those are some really impressive numbers when you factor in the match-ups. The Marlins are nowhere near those two teams in terms of hitting ability. In fact, the Marlins are one of the best teams in the majors to pick on with right-handed pitchers. This season the Marlins rank 23rd in team OPS and 28th in team ISO while having the fifth-highest team K rate against righties.

That will do it for our version of the Pitching Primer today. Best of luck in your contests!
