The NBA Rundown – FanDuel & DraftKings NBA DFS Picks – May 12, 2021 (5/12/21)
In this article, we will be breaking down some of our favorite plays on the slate at their positions. Please note that players on DraftKings have multi-position eligibility and may not always match their position on FanDuel. Remember to always keep your eye on the news as the day progresses as NBA news changes the slate frequently.
I want to talk about the Rockets as a whole in this article as they have been my favorite team to target for a couple of weeks now as they are dealing with a ton of injuries. Four guys, in particular, stand out for me on the Rockets, and while I am not a big fan of stacking in the NBA I would have no issues if all four of these guys end up in a majority of my lineups.
Armoni Brooks – Brooks has played at least 30 minutes in three of the Rockets’ last four games and is putting up big numbers relative to his salary in those games. In his past four games, Brooks is averaging 18 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.1 steals+blocks, and 29.63 fantasy points.
Khyri Thomas – Thomas has played at least 29 minutes in back-to-back games for the Rockets and has scored at least 16 points in each of his three games since joining the Rockets. In those three games, Thomas is averaging 20.3 points, four rebounds, three assists, 2.7 steals, and a block. Thomas has at least 29 fantasy points in each of those games and is averaging 1.38 fantasy points per minute this season.
Kenyon Martin – There is a chance that Christian Wood plays tonight and if Wood plays I would no longer be on Martin. I personally don’t see Wood playing as the Rockets are actively trying to lose games so there is no reason to play their best player who is dealing with an ankle injury. If Wood is out as I expect that would make Martin an elite play. In the past four games with Wood out, Martin is averaging 22.8 points, nine rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.8 steals+blocks, and 44.68 fantasy points.
Kelly Olynyk – Olynyk is the only veteran on the Rockets who is playing big minutes and he is making the most of his minutes as he is breaking out. In his last nine games, Olynyk is averaging 21.3 points, ten rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 2.8 steals+blocks. Olynyk has at least 42 fantasy points in eight of those games and is averaging 47.5 fantasy points in those games.
Boston is another team that I really like for fantasy purposes tonight due to Jaylen Brown being out for the season. Three guys, in particular, are my top targets on Boston.
Kemba Walker – There is a chance that Walker sits out in the second half of the back-to-back or plays limited minutes so make sure you watch his status. With Brown off the court this season, Walker has seen a jump in usage of 4.4% to 30.8% and is averaging 1.15 fantasy points per minute. In the last four games with Brown out, Walker has looked like the Walker off old with averages of 29.8 points, four rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.3 steals. Walker has at least 40 fantasy points in three of those four games and is averaging 43.43 fantasy points.
Evan Fournier – In his last five games, Fournier is averaging 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and two steals+blocks. Fournier has at least 30 fantasy points in each of those games.
Jayson Tatum– Tatum might be my favorite player on this slate as he gets the biggest boost with Brown out. This season with Brown off the court, Tatum has a usage rate of 34.2% and is averaging 1.32 fantasy points per minute. In the 11 games that Brown has missed altogether this season, Tatum is averaging 28.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.7 steals, and 48.55 fantasy points.
Best of the Rest
Some of my other favorite players on this slate not on the two teams mentioned above are as follows.
Russell Westbrook – Westbrook is expensive and will be chalky but he is just playing too well right now. Westbrook has at least 70 fantasy points in five of his past six games including a game against the Hawks who he plays tonight. Westbrook also sees a huge boost with Bradley Beal out. This season with Beal off the court, Westbrook has seen a 5.6% usage increase to 35.7% and is averaging 1.50 fantasy points per minute.
James Johnson – Since joining the Pelicans, Johnson is averaging 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks in the six games that Zion Williamson has missed. Johnson has at least 28 fantasy points in five of those games and is averaging 33.02 fantasy points per game in those games.
That is it for today’s Rundown. Make sure you check out our Cheat Sheets for some other players that I am high on for tonight’s slate.
