This week sees the field take to Torrey Pines where the players will split their rounds between the North and South Courses on Thursday and Friday before taking to the South Course on the weekend. If you are playing the showdown slate on the first two days, it may be a prudent strategy to get an edge by locking in players playing the North Course, which plays approximately 700 yards shorter at just over 6800 yards. With that said, let’s dive in and look at some of the best plays for the week!
Last Week’s Results:
- Scottie Scheffler – 3rd
- Kevin Kisner – MC
- Alex Noren – T14
- Vaughan Taylor – T43
- Harold Varner – MC
The Best of the Best
- Gary Woodland, $9,500
Woodland is priced lower than I think he should be for this event given the fact that he has finished in the top 10 in 4 of his last 5 tournaments this season. He has shown he has the ability to navigate tough courses as was the case for his 2019 US Open title – and I think he has the type of game to get around Torrey Pines, scoring well. Look for him to be in the mix this weekend and take advantage of the affordable pricing here.
- Xander Schauffele, $10,100
Another guy coming into this event playing great golf, Schauffele has three straight top 10 finishes including two second place showings. I think that he’s poised to have a great year and much like Woodland, his game is well suited to get around tough tracks in contention. He’s at a discount to some of the top tier favourites on the board, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see him among the final groups as we roll into Sunday.
The Next Tier
- Ryan Palmer, $8,000
Palmer comes into this one playing great golf, finishing in the top 20 in four straight tournaments over the course of the season. Look for him to keep things rolling this week. He was within one shot of the lead heading to the 18th hole on Sunday in the Sony Open before blowing up a bit on 18 trying to make an eagle on the par 5 18th. He’s priced very reasonably this week and is a great bet to make it around to the weekend with upside of contending if his recent form holds true.
- Cameron Champ, $7,800
Champ has the length to contend here and has the ability to go low with the best of them. We will see if he’ll be able to navigate the course from an accuracy standpoint, but at this price range – you are going to have some risk with just about anyone you roster. You’ll be hard pressed to find a golfer with his type of ceiling for a similar price – and I have no problem locking and loading Champ this weekend…I think he’ll have a strong tournament.
Do Not Forget About…
- Denny McCarthy, $7,100
This weekend will be a good test for McCarthy, who has yet to miss a cut on the young season. The field is stronger at the Famers Insurance Open than it was at many of the tournaments that he has played in – but I like his chances of sticking around into the weekend, and with his three top 10 finishes in 8 tournaments – he has plenty of upside for a rock bottom price.
It should be a fun week of PGA action as we start to hit our stride for the 2020 PGA season! Here’s to hoping it’s a good one for you! If you have any questions at all, you can find me on Twitter @bradsgotmoxy.
