Sharing core plays and a cheat sheet for the December 5, 2019, NBA DFS slate on FanDuel.
Welcome to our NBA Core Plays & Cheat Sheet column for FanDuel.
We’ll be sharing this article with you for all key slates (2 games+) over the course of the 2019-2020 NBA season. Hope you enjoy!
Core Plays – Main Slate
You don’t need a ton of detail for captain obvious-like recommendations of Russell Westbrook and James Harden for deployment tonight. It’s a small 4 game slate, so studs like that are going to be tremendously popular. But let’s say you want to have exposure there – in that case, who do you complement them with on the value side? Or, who do you want to use as pivots instead given Harden’s had his struggles against the Raptors the last couple years? Let’s dive in.
C – Joel Embiid, PHI @ WAS, $10,700
This is a truly premium spot for the Philly big man tonight, going up against a Thomas Bryant-less Wizards club who is going to be forced to look at Wagner (below) and the bench (hopefully with Ian Mahinmi back) to do their best to keep Embiid at bay. Let me be the first to tell you – that isn’t going to be an easy task. Nor is it likely to do well for the Wizards.
This season, the Wizards are allowing nearly +10% vs DvP average for the C position (59.2 FPPG to the opposition), and tonight should really be an exploitation of that weakness. Embiid has put up 56+ FP in 3 of his last 4 games, and this is the exact kind of situation you want him active if you’re comfortable making your C spot a big spend. He should crack the 50 point mark with ease and threaten for 60+ here – especially if WAs can manage to keep it close (here’s looking at you, Bradley Beal – who I must admit I don’t like on this slate in a really tough match-up).
C – Moritz Wagner, WAS vs PHI, $4,800
Let’s say you opt to fade Embiid here and play a Harden and or Westbrook. You’ll need value, and the signs will point towards Wagner in the absence of Bryant yet again. He has 20+ FP in 4 straight games. Some of those with Bryant in the fold, and some of those without him. In any event, he should see 20+ minutes with a mid-20s usage rate as more of an offence-first big man, and despite a difficult match-up against the Sixers, will have enough time on the floor to threaten for a 5.0 ROI (something he’s reached in each of his last 4, too).
SF – James Ennis, PHI @ WAS, $3,700
One of the safer plays on the board for me here today is Ennis, who continues to be underpriced on FanDuel for some reason, even with his role becoming more solidified as a key contributor off the bench. He’s only +$200 vs site minimum here and has now seen at least 22 minutes for them in 3 straight games. This is a great game for exposure on a small slate, and he’s a must-start for me if going with 1-2 premium plays like Harden, Embiid or Westbrook for example.
SG – Jordan McRae, WAS vs PHI, $4,000
He’s been a little inconsistent in the usage department lately, but has seen 20+ minutes in 6 of his last 7 games and has been a nice source of points, assists and steals in that time. He’s averaging 22.8 FPPG in that span as well, only having less than 18.7 points once in that time. I don’t expect a huge game from McRae given PHI being quite stout defensively, but if starting the studs here, you’ll be wanting a couple lower-end fillers like McRae and Ennis that you can generally count on for a 4+ ROI while you let the studs do the big work.
BONUS: PF – Frank Kaminsky, PHX @ NOP, $4,800 (if Baynes sits again)
We had him here last night with Aron Baynes out of the lineup again, and Frank the Tank went off for over 35 fantasy points against the Magic in just 26 minutes of floor time. I’m keeping him in the core plays column here just in case Baynes is ruled out again. The 115 team total and great game for exposure makes him a high-end target if starting here, but Baynes’ return would put a damper on the output. Keep a close eye.
