UFC Fight Night 195 – October 16, 2021: Norma Dumont vs Aspen Ladd

Fight Study (10/16/21)

A rare women’s featherweight bout will be the focus of Saturday’s Main Event when Norma Dumont takes on the bantamweight division’s 3rd ranked contender, Aspen Ladd, from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Both women have fought primarily at bantamweight, but this fight will be contested at 145 lb. Both women are coming off wins as well, and it is Ladd who will be the betting favorite in this one. She will carry the higher price on both DFS platforms, and she can be rostered for $8,400 on DraftKings and $21 on Fanduel. Dumont is available for $7,800 and $17 respectively. As the Main Event, this fight is scheduled for 5 rounds of MMA action, but this fight is currently a small -126 favorite to end before reaching a decision.

Dumont has a professional record of 6-1 with 2 wins by submission and 4 wins by decision. She is 2-1 in the UFC and has won her only featherweight fight (against Felicia Spencer) inside the octagon. She was KO’d by Megan Anderson in her UFC debut, but has rebounded since with wins over Ashlee Evans-Smith and Spencer. Dumont was originally slated to fight Holly Holm, but Holm was dealing with a knee injury and withdrew. Now, on late notice, Ladd is stepping up to featherweight to face her instead. Dumont is the bigger fighter with an inch advantage in both height and reach. Dumont also appears to be the better striker in this matchup and will look to assert her size advantage in this one.

Ladd has a career record of 9-1 with 6 wins by KO/TKO, 1 win by submission, and 2 wins by decision. Ladd will be making her debut as a featherweight, but given her struggles making weight in the past, this may be a better fit for her. She does her best work on the floor where she can ground and pound her opponents. As the shorter fighter with the reach disadvantage, she will prefer to contend with Dumont on the ground in this fight. She did take this fight on short notice, but her conditioning should be up to speed as she was training to fight Macy Chiasson just two weeks ago in a fight that was canceled. Ladd does have the better experience of these two with ten fights to her credit – half of them at the UFC level.

Although Ladd has never fought at this weight, I don’t believe Dumont will have a significant advantage due to the weight increase. I believe Ladd is in fight shape and without the struggle to make weight will be in great condition at 145 lb. Dumont’s longer reach and height advantage, however, will only increase her striking advantage. Ladd must bring this fight to the ground to gain the advantage. I believe she will have her chances, but if Dumont can keep this fight upright, she will have the edge. Keeping Ladd from changing levels over a 5 round fight is no easy task, and I feel that eventually, Dumont will have to grapple. Once on the ground, I think Ladd should have a significant advantage.

In DFS contests, this fight is fairly even, and given the narrow difference in salary, I believe both sides of this fight are very playable. I do like Ladd to win here but will give Dumont a good chance as well. For this reason, I am going to give both fighters a good amount of exposure in multi-entry contests. This fight should be featured quite a bit on DraftKings where both fighters are priced near the average salary. On Fanduel, neither woman will have an easy time realizing their value at prices slightly higher in relation to the field. Still, with 5 rounds available to accumulate scoring, I believe this fight has a good chance to be high-scoring for the winner. Forced to pick, I am leaning Ladd on all formats, but I recognize the change in weight class brings an unknown element which gives me some pause.
