Week 5 NFL DFS: The Value Report

Welcome to the Value Report for Week 5. Sharing top value plays at each position for FanDuel, DraftKings & Yahoo! contests.

There are a lot of different ways to determine who is a value play when it comes to DFS.

You have your traditional way of basing value strictly off of salary. X player is only Y in salary thus he is a value play. I personally don’t like to determine value that way as just because a player is cheap doesn’t actually mean they are a value. Instead of using just salary to determine value, I like to use projections and salary. I look at how high a player is projected relative to his peers and his salary relative to his peers as well.

For example, Player X is the 5th highest projected wide receiver on DraftKings but is only the 15th most expensive wide receiver. That to me is a great value. Another way I like to look at value is to look at how expensive a player is relative to other sites. For instance Player G is the 4th most expensive quarterback on FanDuel and the 5th most expensive quarterback on DraftKings but is the 13th most expensive quarterback on Yahoo. That player would also stand out as a value for me on Yahoo. In this article, we will be breaking down some of the top values we have found using those two formulas on each of the three sites for each of the positions.

Note: You will see some changes in the Salary Rank and Projection rank. Though this article only pertains to the Main Slate of games the Salary Rank and Projection Rank will encompass all players for the week (Thursday-Monday). You can also sort the projection and salary ranks directly on FC now under the columns titled Position Rankings and Overall Rankings.

For this week I really wanted to focus on the players who I feel are elite values or negative values using the salary to projection rank.

Quarterback Values

When looking over players that seem like elite values using the salary rank to projection rank one player really stands out at me at the quarterback position. That player is Daniel Jones. Jones is the fifth-highest projected quarterback on FC this week but his salary rank is in the teens on all sites (DK 14th, FD 13th, Y! 11th). Another player that jumps out at me is Ben Roethlisberger assuming he is able to play. Big Ben is the 21st most expensive quarterback on both FanDuel and DraftKings this week but is the 13th highest projected quarterback on FC.

When it comes to negative value plays at the position the player that jumps out at me the most is Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is between the sixth and seventh most expensive quarterback on all three sites this week but is the 23rd highest projected quarterback on FC. Tom Brady also looks to be a bit of a negative value as he is one of the most expensive quarterbacks this week (DK 5th, FD 4th, Y! 2nd) and is just the 11th highest projected quarterback.

Running Back Values

This is a weird week at the running back position as there are not any names that really jump out at me as elite values when comparing salary to projections. There are a couple of guys that see small increases from their salary rank to their projection rank but none that scream must play me. This can all change of course depending on how injuries shake out in the next couple of days as there are several elite running backs status that are really up in the air right now (Dalvin Cook, Joe Mixon, Christian McCaffrey, Ezekiel Elliott) to name a few.

On the flip side, there are a lot of negative value plays at the running back position this week. Several key names jump out at me. Let’s start with Antonio Gibson. Gibson is the 22nd highest ranked running back on FC this week but is one of the more expensive running backs ranking 11th on salary on DK, 17th on FD, and 10th on Yahoo. Another player that jumps out at me is Nick Chubb thought I will admit I don’t think I agree on this one. Chubb is only the 34th highest projected running back on FC this week (He is in my top five) and is in the top ten in salary rank on each of the sites (DK 10th, FD 9th, Y! 6th).

Wide Receiver Values

Whenever a player is in the top five in projections but is in the low teens in salary rank that player is going to be one of my favorite players on the slate. That is what we have this week with Keenan Allen. Allen is 12th in salary rank on FanDuel and 14th in salary rank on DraftKings while being the third-highest projected wide receiver this week (highest if you look at just the main slate) on FC. Brandin Cooks is another player that fits the bill as player that jumps out as an elite value as he is in the high teens/low 20s salary rank wise (DK 17th, FD 21st) but is the ninth highest project wide receiver on FC.

While there are plenty of negative value plays this week the biggest is DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins is in the top ten in salary on all sites (DK 5th, FD 9th, Y! 5th) but is just the 33rd highest projected wide receiver this week. Odell Beckham Jr. is not on the list below as he is not one of the top 40 highest projected players at the wide receiver position this week but he is someone I wanted to touch on as a huge negative value. OBJ is the 58th highest projected wide receiver this week but is the 18th most expensive wide receiver on DraftKings and the 27th most expensive player on FanDuel. Julio Jones fits the same bill as Beckham Jr. but I am not going to go into detail on him in this article as he has missed practice the past two days and looks likely to sit out this week.

Tight End Values

Not really any elite values at the tight end position this week but we do have some negative value plays. The biggest being Dallas Goedert. Goedert is the sixth most expensive tight end on both DK and FD but is the 25th highest projected tight end on the slate.

Defense Values

Defense is also a funny position to evaluate using salary rank to projection rank as it is so match-up based. Normally the defenses that are the highest salary have the best match-ups and thus have the best projections. That is the case this week for the most part though there are a couple of outliers in both directions that you can easily spot in the chart below.
