Week 3 NFL DFS: The Value Report

Welcome to the Value Report for Week 3. Sharing top value plays at each position for FanDuel, DraftKings & Yahoo! contests.

There are a lot of different ways to determine who is a value play when it comes to DFS.

You have your traditional way of basing value strictly off of salary. X player is only Y in salary thus he is a value play. I personally don’t like to determine value that way as just because a player is cheap doesn’t actually mean they are a value. Instead of using just salary to determine value, I like to use projections and salary. I look at how high a player is projected relative to his peers and his salary relative to his peers as well.

For example, Player X is the 5th highest projected wide receiver on DraftKings but is only the 15th most expensive wide receiver. That to me is a great value. Another way I like to look at value is to look at how expensive a player is relative to other sites. For instance Player G is the 4th most expensive quarterback on FanDuel and the 5th most expensive quarterback on DraftKings but is the 13th most expensive quarterback on Yahoo. That player would also stand out as a value for me on Yahoo. In this article, we will be breaking down some of the top values we have found using those two formulas on each of the three sites for each of the positions.

Quarterback Values

I am going to start the quarterback values this week by comparing players’ salary ranks to their projection rank. I am starting the position this week due to us having one of the best values you are likely going to see when comparing projection rank to salary rank with Justin Fields. Fields is priced as if he would still be splitting snaps with Andy Dalton ranking 21st in salary on DraftKings and Yahoo and 16th on FanDuel but that is not the case with Dalton out. Fields is going to get all of the snaps under center baring injury for the Bears and that has lead him to being my tenth-highest projected quarterback on this slate. The 11 spot difference on DraftKings is just not something we see very often. Justin Herbert also grades out well in this category as he is my third highest projected quarterback this week but is the 7th most expensive starting quarterback on DraftKings, 9th most expensive on FanDuel, and 8th most expensive on Yahoo.

When we compare salaries between the three sites a couple of players jump out at me. The first is Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger sees an eight-spot difference from FanDuel to DraftKings. On FanDuel Big Ben is the 23rd most expensive quarterback while on DraftKings he is the 15th most expensive quarterback. Jared Goff is the opposite of Ben Roethlisberger as he sees an eight-spot difference from DraftKings to FanDuel. On DraftKings Goff is the 21st most expensive quarterback while on FanDuel he is the 13th most expensive quarterback.

When looking at which quarterback might be a negative value between salary rank and projection rank two players jump out at me. Those players are Ryan Tannehill (23rd projection rank, 10th DK salary rank, 15th FD salary rank, Y! 12th salary rank) and Kirk Cousins (18th projection rank, 9th DK salary rank, 7th FD salary rank, 10th Y! salary rank).

Running Back Values

There are several running back values when comparing salaries between the sites. I am not going to list all of those values but did want to highlight some. The first I wanted to highlight is Najee Harris. Harris is a value on Yahoo as he is the 16th most expensive running back on that site compared to the 7th most expensive on DraftKings and 6th most expensive on FanDuel. Saquon Barkley is an elite value on FanDuel going from the 8th most expensive running back on DraftKings to the 18th most expensive running back on FanDuel. On DraftKings, Clyde Edwards-Helarie screams play me using salary rank between DraftKings and FanDuel Edwards-Helarie sees an 18 spot difference between the sites going from the 13th most expensive running back on FanDuel to just the 31st most expensive on FanDuel.

When looking at projections the player that jumps out to me the most is Antonio Gibson. Gibson is my fifth-highest projected running back this week but is the 12th most expensive running back on DraftKings, 17th most expensive running back on FanDuel, and 18th most expensive running back on Yahoo. Leonard Fournette (27th DK salary rank, 22nd FD salary rank, 23rd Y! salary rank, 11th proj rank) and Mike Davis (25th DK salary rank, 23rd FD salary rank, 29th Y! salary rank, 9th proj rank) also grade out well in the projection to salary rank category.

If we look at negative values the biggest negative value when looking at projections is Saquon Barkley at least on DraftKings and Yahoo. As mentioned before he is in the top ten salary rank on those sites but is projected to be just the 21st highest scoring running back on this slate which is right in line with his FanDuel salary rank. David Montgomery also looks like a negative value as he is between the 10th and 11th most expensive running backs on each site but is only my 24th highest projected running back.

Wide Receiver Values

I am going to focus on the projection to salary formula at wide receiver as there are three wide receivers that jump off the page as great values and two that jump out as negative values.

Starting with the great values Diontae Johnson is the first player that jumps out. Johnson ranks in the mid to upper teens salary rank-wise (14th DK, 13th FD, 19th Y!) but is my highest projected wide receiver his week. Marvin Jones also jumps out as an even better value than Johnson as he is my fifth-highest projected wide receiver but ranks 36th in salary on DraftKings, 22nd in salary on FanDuel, and 31st in salary on Yahoo. The last wide receiver that jumps out at me is Tee Higgins. Higgins is my 13th highest projected receiver this week and is the 34th most expensive wide receiving on DraftKings, 23rd most expensive wide receiver on FanDuel, and the 24th most important wide receiver on Yahoo. It is important to note that as of this writing both Johnson and Higgins are yet to practice this week and both are listed as questionable to play this week.

When it comes to negative values Calvin Ridley and DeAndre Hopkins stand out to me. Ridley goes from being the 7th most expensive wide out on DraftKings and third most expensive on FanDuel to just my 19th highest projected receiver. Hopkins goes from the second or first most expensive wide receiver to the 22nd highest projected wide out. It is also important to not that Hopkins is also dealing with an injury and his status for this week is up in the air which is why I personally have such a low projection on him this week.

Tight End Values

The tight end salaries are pretty much the same throughout the sites this week and there really isn’t one that jumps out at me as a great value when using that formula. There are however a couple of tight ends that jump out at me as great values when comparing projection to salary. The first of those players is Albert Okwuegbunam. Okwugebunam is in the high teens on all three sites salary rank-wise (19th DK, 17th FD, 20th Y!) but is my 12th highest projected tight end this week. Jack Doyle is another tight end that jumps out at me as he is my tenth-highest projected tight end and 15th in salary on DraftKings, 19th on FanDuel, and 16th on Yahoo.

When looking at negative value this week Tyler Higbee jumps out. Highbee is between the tenth and ninth most expensive on each site yet the 17th highest projected tight end this week. Mike Gesicki is also a huge negative value as the 12th most expensive tight end on DraftKings and ninth most expensive tight in on FanDuel but only the 20th highest projected tight end this week.

Defense Values

The obvious value at the defensive position this week on Yahoo is the Bills. The Bills are my top projected defense this week but are only the 21st most expensive defense this week. The Patriots also grade out very highly on Yahoo as they are my second-highest projected defense and are the 17th most expensive defense on that site. Both defenses also grade out highly when comparing salaries between the sites. The Bills are the 4th most expensive defense on DraftKings and 9th most expensive on FanDuel while the Patriots are the 2nd most expensive on DraftKings and 3rd most expensive on FanDuel.

On FanDuel the Buccaneers grade out highly when comparing salaries to DraftKings. The Bucs see a ten spot difference between the sites as the 15th most expensive defense on FanDuel and the 5th most expensive defense on DraftKings. The Giants are another team that grades out highly from FanDuel to DraftKings as they also see a ten spot difference (19th FD salary rank, 9th DK salary rank).

On DraftKings, the Falcons are the best value when comparing salaries to FanDuel. The Falcons have a 15 spot difference going from the 5th most expensive defense on FanDuel to just the 10th most expensive defense on DraftKings.

The Bears are also a team that grades out highly on the projection front on all three sites as they are my 6th highest projected defense and are in the teens in salary rank on all sites (13th DK, 17th FD, 14th Y!).
