Week 1 NFL DFS Defensive (DST) Targets For FanDuel & DraftKings

Welcome to the FC Insights Defensive Targets Article. In this post, we will be breaking down our top options and plays at the DST position for each DFS week of the 2021-2022 NFL DFS season.

Top Plays

Packers ($4,500 FD, $3,500 DK)

Saints 23.00 30.1 29 17

I don’t actually like the Packers’ defense this week but my love for Jameis Winston and my hatred for the Packers is playing a big part in this. When I actually step back and just let the numbers speak for themselves the Packers grade out really high for me. The Packers ranked in the top half of the league in yards allowed per game, points allowed per game, and sacks. The fact that Winston is now the starting quarterback for the Saints also gives the Packers a big boost. Winston can put up numbers with his big arm but he is also a turnover-prone quarterback. The last time we saw Winston as a starting quarterback he threw a league-high 30 interceptions while also fumbling 12 times.

Jaguars ($3,900 FD, $2,700 DK)

Opponent Opponent Team Total Opponent Points Per Game Opponent Total Sacks Allowed  Opponent Total Turnovers
Texans 21.25 24.0 50 18

The Jaguars defense is going to be the chalk defense this week and I am going to be eating the chalk. The Texans’ offense on paper is just awful. The Texans lost Will Fuller to the Dolphins and Deshaun Watson is not going to play while his legal issues get sorted out. With Watson out that is going to leave Tyrod Taylor as their QB. While I love Taylor as a person as he is from my area and does a lot for the community I don’t think he is a good quarterback. Taylor is more of a game manager and is not going to really air it out. With that being said Taylor is a game manager does limit the Jaguars’ defense some as he doesn’t turn the ball over much. The Texans are also expected to be run-heavy which means we likely won’t see a lot of sacks as well. While those two factors normally make me avoid a defense I don’t see the Texans scoring many if any points which makes up for those two factors.

Value Play

Jets ($3,500 FD, $2,400 DK)

Panthers 24.0 21.9 36 21

I really like the Jets defense as a value play this week for a couple of reasons. The first reason is I think the Jets overall are going to be a better defense. The Jets have a better coaching staff with Robert Saleh taking over for Adam Gase. Saleh was the defensive coordinator for the really good 49ers’ defense. The second reason is I am not a big believer in the Panthers’ offense as Sam Darnold is their quarterback. I was never a Darnold fan in college and while playing for Adam Gase for his career is a death sentence Darnold has not shown me much in his career to make me think he can turn things around. The Panthers also lost some key pieces on offense with Russell Okung and Curtis Samuel moving on.
