DraftKings & FanDuel NASCAR DFS – Coca-Cola 600 – May 24, 2020 (5/24/20)
We return to some normalcy here with Memorial Day weekend and the Coca-Cola 600. As a note, qualifying happens early afternoon on Sunday and if any major changes need to be made to this article they will be updated prior to Sunday’s race. Since we still won’t get any practice data, the starting positions shouldn’t drastically change any plays listed in this article, unless a cheaper target magically qualifies near the top. This race at Charolette is also pretty unpredictable as it ranks 21st in average laps finished. On top of that, this is also the longest race on the schedule, running 600 miles. Last year in this race we had 13 caution flags all for wrecks, which led to 20% of this race being run under caution.
Martin Truex Jr – DK: $10,600 | FD: $13,700
The price is high here but Truex is going to lead my list of dominators for Sunday’s race. I say this without knowing his starting position, but for this play I do not think it will matter much. In a perfect world, we will grab as much differential as we can, but the overall dominance by Truex at this Charolette track can’t be ignored. In Truex’s last eight races at Charolette, his worst finish is 13th, while winning three times and finishing inside the top five seven times. Back in 2016 Truex led 392 of the 400 laps, starting on the pole and finishing the race in first. Truex won this race one year ago, starting 14th and leading 116 laps which led to the win. It is going to be hard for me to fade a guy who has finished third, second, and first in the last three years at this race. With no practice stats I expect this play to be pretty chalky, but when you need to focus on historical data it doesn’t get much better than this.
Update: Truex will start 8th
Ryan Newman – DK: $6,500 | FD: $7,000
With a race that you are likely going to need two, maybe three, dominators from, we are going to need to off-set some salary here. Now, I do think there is some risk with Newman here as we all know his horrific crash at Daytona. Darlington was his return to racing last week and after starting 21st, Newman finished 15th. The worry here is in a 600-mile race, is Newman back to full strength to mentally and physically handle it? I don’t have concerns about it, I think it is just fair to add it to the equation. So, with a variable at play, why call Newman a core play here? The fact is, he is just too cheap. Newman is just $6,500 on DraftKings and $7,000 on FanDuel. By rostering Newman you keep some upside while freeing up the salary to target the Truex’s and any other of the top ten priced options. We have never seen a ton of success from Newman here at Charolette, but outside of a poor 2018 run it also hasn’t been horrible. The key here is the starting spot. If Newman qualifies inside the top ten then this play becomes a bit more volatile. Though as I mentioned in the header, this race is pretty unpredictable and historically Ryan Newman has consistently finished this race outside of 2017.
Pending starting position, Chris Buescher at $6,700 is an alternative to Newman or even someone to consider alongside of him.
Update: Newman will start 18th. Buescher will start 19th.
Aric Almirola – DK: $7,500 | FD: $8,300
Almirola was someone I was already trending upwards on, but after spinning out in qualifying with what appears to be minimal to no damage to his car, Almirola will start this race in 40th. This is not a “40th” starting quality car, so place differential upside is huge today. Expect this to end up being one of, if not the, highest owned cars today.
