Core plays and a GPP cheat sheet for the February 21, 2020, NBA DFS FanDuel slate
Welcome to our NBA Core Plays & Cheat Sheet column for FanDuel. We share this article for all main slates (3 games+) over the course of the 2019-2020 NBA season. We hope you enjoy!
Take advantage of injuries
There are a couple of key players that are out due to injury tonight in the form of Damian Lillard, Karl-Anthony Towns, Kemba Walker and to a lesser extent Mike Conley. With these guys out there are several guys that jump out to me as elite plays. Let’s start with C.J. McCollum who at only $6,900 in salary might be my favorite player on this entire slate. This season with Lillard off the court, McCollum has seen a 7.9% increase in usage to 33.9%. In the three games that Lillard has missed entirely that McCollum has played in over the past two seasons, McCollum is averaging 29 points, 6.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists, 2.3 steals+blocks, and 54.17 fantasy points.
When it comes to Karl-Anthony Towns several players get a boost with James Johnson being the one who benefits the most. Johnson started the last game before the break that Towns missed and played well in his 32 minutes with an all-around stat line of 5/5/5 with three steals and three blocks on his way to 33.50 fantasy points. Tonight I see Johnson playing over 30 minutes once again and producing in the 25 to 30 fantasy point range which would be in line with what we need from him at his $5,200 salary.
I am not going to get into the Kemba Walker or Mike Conley situation in detail as when it comes to Walker not one player benefits rather the whole team benefits as his usage gets spread out throughout the likes of Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Gordon Hayward who are all in my player pool but none are core plays. For Conley, Jordan Clarkson does get a huge boost and would be a core play of mine on any other slate but with him being listed at shooting guard he is not due to the fact that McCollum is my top points per dollar play on this slate and there is another mispriced shooting guard that I am going to talk about in the next section of this article.
Take advantage of mispricing
There are several players that come to mind when being mispriced but none bigger than Victor Oladipo. Oladipo has not had a great start in his return from injury with only two games over 20 fantasy points but he was on a minute restriction in each of those games and the minute’s restriction is off. We should see Oladipo play minutes in the mid-30s tonight against a bad Knicks defense. This season the Knicks rank in the bottom half of the NBA in both team defensive net rating and fantasy points allowed per game to shooting guards. While there is certainly risk with Oladipo tonight it is risk I am willing to take at only $4,600 in salary.
Stud of the night
As always I am going to finish this article with my stud of the night. Tonight that stud is Jayson Tatum who is just way too damn cheap tonight at only $8,700. I touched on Tatum getting a boost with Walker out earlier but wanted to really dig into the numbers in this portion of the article. This season with Walker off the floor, Tatum has seen an increase in usage of 4.6% to 32.7% and is averaging 1.26 fantasy points per minute. Tatum not only sees the boost with Walker out but you have to love the match-up against the Wolves as they have struggled defensively this season and against power forwards they rank 19th or worst in fantasy points allowed per game and defensive efficiency to the position.
