Core Plays – Main Slate
PG – Ish Smith, WAS vs LAC, $4,600
The Wizards are going to be very popular this evening, but for good reason. There is a lot of value to be had here, as we have 3 key guys under $6,000 that are really getting it done right now. With Isaiah Thomas out once again today, Smith is looking at yet another 30+ minutes in a start for the Wiz, and he’s scored at least 31 fantasy points in each of the last two in the same situation. Despite a tougher DvP situation, he’s hard to avoid as a PG2 with tremendous intrinsic value.
C – Moritz Wagner, WAS vs LAC, $5,700
Wagner has now eclipsed the 20+ FP mark in 6 straight games, with his largest in that span coming his last time out (35.3 FP in 31 minutes of 25.4% usage rate ball). Over the last couple of weeks, the Clippers have ranked right at the league average in terms of opposing FPPG to Cs (52.2) – and with Thomas Bryant out, the minutes will continue to funnel Wagner’s way. Look for another 30+ point kind of game here. He’s not a true must-start as there is a 20-ish point floor, but he’s still trending in the right direction from a leading indicator perspective.
PF – Rui Hachimura, WAS vs LAC, $5,800
He’s back to getting huge minutes for the Wizards, eclipsing 38 in each of his last 4 games and holding a 20% usage rate average in that span. He’s put together a really nice floor/ceiling combination in those 4 as well, with at least 26 fantasy points scored (4.5 ROI) but as many as 48.3 on the high side. That 48.3 came against the same Clippers club he’s facing today – but I’m expecting them to adjust to help keep him more in check. A 18-8-2-1 kind of game is still realistic as a baseline, and you’d be happy with that as a threat for 35+ FP anyways.
SG – Dennis Schroder, OKC @ POR, $5,700
I was debating between Schroder and Chris Paul here, but ultimately feel safer recommending Schroder thanks in large part to a thinner position and $1,500 cheaper price tag. Oh – and not to mention the fact that he’s been arguably more consistent and better in the last couple weeks. He is averaging 29.8 FPPG in his last 4 games, playing bigger minutes off the bench and doing so with a heavy usage rate. Now, I must admit that I’m a little discouraged by his last outing against the Blazers (16.6 FP in 24 minutes) – but a bounce-back to at least the upper-20s is realistic given how his usage rate is trending. He’s more of a GPP play than cash game option tonight, but as a top 3 game in terms of game total to target, he’s a nice mid-range way to gain access with upside.
