Core Plays – Main Slate

PHI without Ben Simmons @ DEN

With Simmons going down to injury for the next few games, we’re looking at some pretty significant minutes and touches opening up for the Sixers. There’s no question that Joel Embiid is going to see an immense boost in usage – but frankly I worry about the upside in what is a very difficult match-up against Nikola Jokic and the DEN defense at altitude.

So, the immediate values that will rise to relevance are Furkan Kokmaz and Raulzinho Neto, who are each just $100 or $200 above site minimum and could be looking at mid to upper-20s minutes. Neto is going to be more of a facilitator, while Korkmaz is more of a finisher. Neto has traditionally had 0.89 FPPG while Korkmaz is about 10% less than that at 0.81. Given we’re looking at elevation here at Denver, I’d skew towards the non-shooter in Neto if you want to punt a position.

Frankly, the more interesting situation becomes thinking about which of the more meaningful, well-rounded, starter-level guys are going to get a boost. And that comes down to Tobias Harris and Josh Richardson for me. Harris has seen his price drop to $6,500 which is a bargain for someone who may touch 38-40 minutes tonight. He’s been very good this year for PHI and could see a 37-40 minute, 27-30% usage rate game here a core piece on both sides of the ball. Josh Richardson is an even more intriguing play if you ask me, given he’s $600 cheaper and plays what you could argue is a thinner position these days (SG). He saw a nice little boost in his role last game, and has eclipsed 27+ FDP in 4 of his last 5 outings. If he gets to play 35-37 minutes (certainly within scope tonight), he could finish as a 6+ ROI guy here and be a fantastic play. He’s the guy I am most excited about from this group of 4 names to consider here.

SG – D’Angelo Russell, GSW @ MIN, $8,700

After missing their last game, Russell is now probable to face the Timberwolves on Friday night. This is a fantastic situation for Russell, who is averaging 1.21 FPPM – especially given he could see 35+ minutes here against one of the softest defenses on the slate (in fact they are allowing 56.6 FPPG to opposing PGs and 40.5 FPPG to SGs). Given we’ve seen his price dip a little bit while the usage is expected to remain sky high while he’s on the floor (think 35%+), he’s a premium SG play tonight in my books.

SF – Pascal Siakam, TOR @ NOP, $9,300

We don’t have to look back too far to see the kind of damage Siakam is able to do in a match-up like this. Their first game of the season was against the Pelicans, where Siakam popped for more than 60 fantasy points thanks to not only his heavy minutes, but also a tremendous mis-match for him with how the Pelicans have to play now without Anthony Davis and the lack of a defender(s) that can keep up with his wiry, energetic, high-twitch nature. Both Siakam and Kyle Lowry are in fantastic spots this evening given the softness of the NOP defense (allowing 58.4 FPPG to PG; tops on the slate in this area).

C – Tristan Thompson, CLE @ WAS, $8,300

As I was perusing the C position tonight, there really weren’t very many names that I was overly excited about starting here. And when you look a little deeper into the options at different price levels – it’s easy to get content with penciling in Thompson given he’s playing heavy minutes, rebounding at an elite clip, and has one of the best DvP match-ups at the position on the Friday night slate.

Thompson has now had 40+ FP in B2B games, and 38+ in 5 of his last 6. His usage on most nights settles into the low-20s (a thing of beauty for high REB% bigs to drive up the floor nice and high), and with both the match-up and projected pace favoring plenty of opportunities to do damage on the glass – he’s a high floor guy at an affordable price that you can start with confidence knowing he’ll deliver for you in a plus spot.
