The Starting 5: Featuring pitcher and hitter MLB DFS picks for FanDuel & DraftKings cash game lineups on Thursday, August 9, 2018 (8/9).
Sharing articles with picks and advice to help you build winning MLB lineups on FanDuel (FD) and DraftKings (DK).
Welcome to the Starting Five MLB edition. In this article, we will give you a pitcher to consider and three hitters in each salary range. The hitters will be broken down into the following categories stud ($4,000 plus in salary), midrange ($3,000 to $3,900 in salary) and value hitter (below $3,000 in salary). We will use FanDuel’s pricing as a reference. To end the article we will give you our top player of the day regardless if that player is a hitter or pitcher. These picks will also come from the main slate of games on FanDuel each day and may not include all games played that day.
Manning the Mound
SP to Target: Yonny Chirinos, TB
You are playing with fire when you play one of the Rays long relievers as there is a chance that their plans change and the long reliever that was expected to come into the game never does. That happened with Chirinos last Friday as he was reported to be the Rays pitcher getting the bulk of the innings and then never pitched. While that may happen again tonight I am willing to take the chance on Chirinos as he is dirt cheap and faces an Orioles team that though has been hitting the ball better since the all-star break is still one of the worst hitting teams in the majors. This season the Orioles rank 25th in team OPS and team wOBA against right-handed pitching while having the sixth worst team K rate at 24.1%.
The Batter’s Box
Stud Bat to Target: 2B, Brian Dozier, LAD
I know that Dozier has struggled against left-handed pitching this season but he has traditionally hit them well. Just last season, Dozier has an OPS of 1.057, an ISO of .303 and a wOBA of .437 against lefties. With Dozier expected to hit lead-off for the Dodgers against the struggling left-handed Tyler Anderson at Coors Field, I am expecting we see the Dozier of old and he is one of my favorite players on this slate.
Mid-Range Bat to Target: OF, Matt Kemp, LAD
I am going to another Dodgers hitter on this slate this time Kemp as Kemp has destroyed left-handed pitching this season. Kemp comes into tonight’s game with an OPS of .923, an ISO of .294 and a wOBA of .386 against lefties this season. Tyler Anderson is once again struggling and in the past two games, he has allowed 11 runs with four home runs in just 10 innings of work in those starts.
Bargain Bin Bat to Target: SS, Brandon Crawford, SF
Whenever Ivan Nova takes the mound you know you can target the opposing team’s left-handed hitters. Nova is an extreme splits pitcher and over the past three seasons, Nova is allowing lefties to slash .302/.340/.520 with a .363 wOBA. Those struggles make Crawford one of my favorite value plays as he is not only left-handed but he has hit Nova very well in his career with five hits with three of those being extra-base hits and four RBIs in his 11 at-bats against Nova.
Top Play of the Day
1B, Steve Pearce, BOS
I have been riding Pearce ever since he joined the Red Sox. Pearce is slashing .321/.426/.661 with an ISO of .339 and a wOBA of .452 with five home runs in his 19 games with the Sox. Pearce is not only hot since joining the Sox but he has also killed left-handed pitching this season with an ISO of 1.068, an ISO of .294 and a wOBA of .451 against them this season. In a revenge game against his former team, Pearce is by far my favorite hitter on this slate even over the guys in Coors Field.
Best of luck in your contests today!
