Sharing articles with picks and advice to help you build winning MLB lineups on FanDuel (FD) and DraftKings (DK).
Welcome to the Starting Five MLB edition. In this article, we will give you a pitcher to consider and three hitters in each salary range. The hitters will be broken down into the following categories stud ($4,000 plus in salary), midrange ($3,000 to $3,900 in salary) and value hitter (below $3,000 in salary). We will use FanDuel’s pricing as a reference. To end the article we will give you our top player of the day regardless if that player is a hitter or pitcher. These picks will also come from the main slate of games on FanDuel each day and may not include all games played that day.
Manning the Mound
SP to Target: Trevor Bauer, CLE
Bauer and the Tribe continue their series on the south side of Chicago, going up against the White Sox. Bauer remains affordably priced for a pitcher throwing as well as he is on both sites ($10,200 FD, $11,500 on DK). What Bauer has done this year has been remarkable. He has a 2.62 ERA to go along with a 2.47 FIP and a 3.15 xFIP. He has 11.4 K/9, which is an elite number – and he has held both RHB and LHB to a sub .280 wOBA. Going up against the White Sox in a plus match-up, I love the spot he is in tonight and he is my top pitching play on the board, with Jose Berrios a close second.
The Batter’s Box
Stud Bat to Target: 1B, Joey Votto, CIN
Votto is in a great spot tonight, for the second night in a row. First, Jason Hammel is a hittable arm, and while he has been a reverse split arm so far in 2018 – career trends suggest otherwise, and I have no problem playing the other side of the coin with a quality RH stick. On the season, Votto is crushing RHP: 1.002 OPS, .432 wOBA, 175 wRC+. He is a great high spend option for tonight’s main slate with as high of a floor as you can find for a hitter in DFS.
Mid-Range Bat to Target: OF, Scott Schebler, CIN
As you can tell with back to back picks from the Reds against Jason Hammel, I like the spot that the Reds are in. Schebler has been swinging it in the month of June against RHP, owning a 1.007 OPS to go along with a wOBA of .431. He remains affordable, and shouldn’t be too high owned – making him a great option in the mid-priced range when it comes to building line-ups for tonight.
Bargain Bin Bat to Target: OF Enrique Hernandez, LAD
Hernandez is someone that I like to target against LHP – and tonight fits the bill as the Dodgers go up against Cole Hamels. Hamels is due for some regression unless he improves his underlying stats – and if you are looking for a punt with upside, Hernandez is a great fit. On the season, Hamels has allowed almost 2 HR/9, and his 3.86 ERA is a bit of a mirage with his FIP sitting about 5. RHB have hit 16 HR’s on the season against him – and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Hernandez add to that total. Hernandez owns a .269 ISO and a wOBA of .364 against LHP since the start of the 2017 season.
Top Play of the Day
3B Justin Turner, LAD
Turner is an affordable option to man the hot corner tonight for your line-ups. He goes up against a hittable LHP – drawing the match-up against Cole Hamels, who has allowed at least 2 HR in each of his past 4 starts. Turner remains affordable – and is a great mid-priced option when it comes to building line-ups. Since the start of the 2017 season, Turner has put up a 1.138 OPS, an ISO of .296, and a wOBA of .469 against LHP.
Best of luck in your contests today!
