The Starting 5: Featuring pitcher and hitter MLB DFS picks for FanDuel & DraftKings cash game lineups on Thursday, May 24, 2018 (5/24).
Sharing articles with picks and advice to help you build winning MLB lineups on FanDuel (FD) and DraftKings (DK).
Welcome to the Starting Five MLB edition. In this article, we will give you a pitcher to consider and three hitters in each salary range. The hitters will be broken down into the following categories stud ($4,000 plus in salary), midrange ($3,000 to $3,900 in salary) and value hitter (below $3,000 in salary). We will use FanDuel’s pricing as a reference. To end the article we will give you our top player of the day regardless if that player is a hitter or pitcher. These picks will also come from the main slate of games on FanDuel each day and may not include all games played that day.
Manning the Mound
SP to Target: Rick Porcello, BOS
We have a three-game slate on FanDuel and I am personally just going to take the night off. For those of you playing Porcello is by far your top option as he has been really good this season and has been really good against the Rays. In his three starts against the Rays, Porcello has allowed a total of 7 runs while striking out 17 in 20.1 innings of action. Porcello is averaging 37 fantasy points in those starts and there is no reason to believe he doesn’t hit that mark again tonight.
The Batter’s Box
Stud Bat to Target: OF, J.D. Martinez, BOS
Blake Snell is not a bad pitcher at all but he is left-handed and that has to put Martinez on your radar. Since the start of last season, Martinez has an OPS of 1.222, an ISO of .405 and a wOBA of .491 against lefties.
Mid-Range Bat to Target: OF, Lorenzo Cain, MIL
Steven Matz has really struggled against right-handed hitting this season as he is allowing them to slug .509 with a .360 wOBA. Cain has been excellent against left-handed pitching this season slashing .400/.478/.700 with an ISO of .300 and a wOBA of .496. Don’t over think this and roster Cain tonight.
Bargain Bin Bat to Target: OF, Hernan Perez, MIL
Perez is not a good hitter at all but he is site minimum on FanDuel and should be batting in the top six of the order for a Brewers team that at the moment has the highest projected run total at 4.7 runs on the slate.
Top Play of Day
3B, Mike Moustakas, KC
Austin Bibens-Dirkx is going to make his first start of the season tonight and he is a pitcher I want to target hitters against. Last season Bibens-Dirkx had a FIP of 5.68, an HR/9 rate of 1.82 and a WHIP of 1.36. Bibens-Dirkx allowed hitters to slash .268/.324/.478 with a .340 wOBA. The Royals are one of my favorite teams to stack and Moustakas is my favorite hitter from that team as he kills right-handed pitching with an OPS of .933, an ISO of .276 and a wOBA of .391 against them this season.
Best of luck in your contests today!
