Five Mid-Late Round Fliers

Our series on Draft Positions continues today with a look at five players worth taking a flier on late in your Fantasy Football 2014 drafts!

We are focusing on players taken late in 12 or 14 team drafts that have the ability to make impacts on your season.  Sure, not all of them will hit – but given that many late round picks end up being cut in exchange for FA or Waiver acquisitions – we feel these players are well worth selecting when your draft or auction enters the late stages!

TE Travis Kelce

Kelce has been turning heads in Chiefs camp – and really there isn’t a whole lot standing in his way from being a potential TE1 this season.  Anthony Fasano is a solid, but unspectacular option at the TE position, and while he is very steady – there isn’t any upside there.  Kelce has the ability to get vertical up the seam for the Chiefs passing attack, and Alex Smith would likely make great use of the athleticism that Kelce brings to the table.  If you are punting TE and don’t end up with an impact option at the position, Kelce is a great late round pick that could really help your chances in 2014 if he is able to break out.

WR Kelvin Benjamin

Much has been made about the lack of WR options in Carolina, and for good reason.  Benjamin will be given every opportunity to prove he can be the main option outside for Cam Newton, and if he doesn’t claim that role right off the hop in 2014, he will be given the chance to become the go-to target as the season progresses.  The early reports from camp are that he is playing well and running good routes – something that was questioned when the Panthers selected him in the 2014 NFL Draft.  With a big frame – he is a prime red-zone target, and if you are looking for a WR with upside late in your draft, look no further than Benjamin.

RB Fred Jackson

Every year people write off Jackson, and every year he vastly outproduces his ADP.  The age, 33, is a big questionmark, but don’t forget that Jackson doesn’t have the miles on his body that a typical 33 year old has due to not getting much playingtime until a few seasons ago(only 1,139 career carries).  He looks again to be a focal point of the Bills offence in all situations, and should remain the goalline back for Buffalo.  At worst, he will again share the workload with C.J. Spiller in the backfield for the Bills.  Currently, he is the 98th player being drafted, and he is well worth the pick in the 8th round.  I’d even go ahead and grab him in the 7th if you are looking for stability and depth in your backfield.  A classic pick that will look very un-sexy when you announce it to your league, but come week 5 or 6 – you will likely be very happy to have Jackson as an option on your roster.

WR Justin Hunter

I love everything that Hunter brings to the table as a player that can stretch the field and make plays.  He has a great frame for a WR – and everything looks great……except for the fact that he has Jake Locker throwing him the football.  As a result, his production in 2014 will likely be volatile, but expect some big games from this very talented wideout.

TE Zach Ertz

If I miss out on the top 3 at TE this season, then I am jumping all over Ertz, who currently has an ADP of 115th.  He seems to be building a rapport with Nick Foles, and I expect big things from this young TE.  If you do miss out on the elite options at the TE position, I recommend you wait a few rounds and lock in Ertz a little later on, after bolstering your depth at RB and WR.  There aren’t many TE’s that have the uspide that Ertz brings to the table.
