4 Undervalued 2014 PPR Runningbacks

Many times in PPR formats, owners undervalue RB’s that excel at catching passes.

Be the one to take advantage!  We’ve listed 4 RB’s that will catch passes in 2014, and can be a great source of depth for your 2014 fantasy football backfield.

Yes – I was that guy that owned Danny Woodhead last year in any PPR league that I could.  Not that he was the type of player that vaulted my teams to greatness…..but he was a very useful piece that I could plug in most weeks if needed, and rarely did he disappoint.

Being able to add depth to your roster is crucial.  And in PPR leagues, I find this easier as many do not fully value those RB’s that catch a lot of passes.

Today, I am going to highlight 4 RB’s that have significantly more value in any PPR format, regardless of if 1 point or 0.5 points are awarded per catch:

Shane Vereen, New England Patriots

Vereen has to stay healthy, but if he does – look for him to provide great value in PPR formats.  He only played in 8 of the Patriots’ games in 2013, and still managed to produce 635 yards from scrimmage to go with 4 TD’s.  Oh, and he also chipped in with 47 catches.  He will be an excellent source of fantasy points in PPR formats as I don’t see him going away in the passing game for the Patriots.

Ideal fit on your roster: low end RB2, but I’d be comfortable with him as a high end RB2.

Pierre Thomas, New Orleans Saints

Thomas caught 77 balls last year – and I expect him to post numbers in that range again now that Darren Sproles has departed.  Rumblings out of New Orleans are that Mark Ingram is looking good in camp, but don’t let that scare you.  The Saints will find a way to get Thomas on the field plenty, and PPR owners can take advantage of Thomas’ relevance in the passing game to help their teams in 2014.

Ideal fit on your roster: RB3, but I’d be comfortable with him as a RB2.

Danny Woodhead, San Diego Chargers

The Chargers brought in Donald Brown in the offseason to backup Ryan Mathews, which will scare even some PPR teams away fromWoodhead in 2014.  I find it hard to believe that Danny won’t remain the 3rd down back in San Diego.  He was just far too effective last season to not remain on the field in passing situations.  I do expect his numbers to be a little lower as it is hard to expect him to match his totals of 2013 (1034 yards from scrimmage and 8 TD’s), but even with that in mind, Woodhead is a great piece to target for RB depth in PPR formats.

Ideal fit on your roster: RB4, but I’d be comfortable with him as a RB3.

Joique Bell, Detroit Lions

Many are scared away from Bell because Reggie Bush is in town.  And while Bush is also extremely valuable in PPR formats – Bell is a great value play relative to his ADP.  He had 1197 yards from scrimmage to go along with 53 catches and 8 TD’s in 2013.  Stafford loves to check it down to his backs, and I don’t expect anything to change on that front this season.  Also, keep in mind that if anything were to happen to Bush with respect to his health – Bell could be an absolute steal.

Ideal fit on your roster: RB3, but I’d be comfortable with him as a low end RB2.

Do you have any PPR diamonds in the rough at the running back position?  Care to disagree with any of the above mentioned options?  We want to hear from you!
